Antoine Griezmann scored his first MLS goal, Orlando City defeated San Jose Earthquakes 4-0

San Jose, California, 07/22/2026 - Alfred Chu

After the 2026 FIFA World Cup Summer break, MLS enters the second half of the season. A busy summer break with new signings from both teams. The Earthquakes signed Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn, replacing Daniel, who was traded to FC Dallas. Orlando City signed French forward, former World Cup winner Antoine Griezmann.

Angus Gunn and Antoine Griezmann are set to make their MLS debuts in the game.

Orlando City started the game strong, David Brekalo scored a free header in the box in the 7th minute, assisted by a Eduard Atuesta free kick on the right wing.

In the 27th minute, the Earthquakes scored from a direct attack, but it was ruled offside. Orlando City took advantage of the false alarm, Iván Angulo shot from outside the box, skipping past Angus Gunn, giving Orlando City a 2-0 lead entering the second half.

The Earthquakes didn’t learn from mistakes in the first half, conceding another goal just 3 minutes into the second half. Antoine Griezmann finds space in the box and scores his 1st MLS goal and 300th career goal in his debut for Orlando City.

Eduard Atuesta delivered another set-piece assist to Braian Ojeda, scoring a header near the penalty area and beating Angus Gunn in the near post, bringing Orlando City a 4-0 victory at PayPal Park.

After the match, San Jose Earthquakes head coach Bruce Arena said the team played poorly with passes and conceded goals early; Orlando is a better team today, and well deserved win. When asked about new signing Gunn’s performance today, “He had some good saves…He has only played one game, you don’t want to say giving up 4 goals in your first game is anything good, but he was hung out to dry there. Angus will be fine, he is the least of our worries.” Arena also explained the signing of Angus Gunn, “Our previous goalkeeper had a desire to leave here, and I’ve been recruiting Angus for about a year, we know he is a good goalkeeper, and we feel good about having him here.”

Orlando secured 3 points at PayPal Park and has yet to concede a goal to the Earthquakes since 2019.

San Jose Earthquakes are lacking sparks from the first half of the season, 4 losses in the last 5 games. They will host the 105th California Clasico against the LA Galaxy Saturday, July 25 at Stanford Stadium.
